ETFs
An ETF is a group of assets (stocks, bonds, securities, etc). These assets come from a range of different companies. If one company performs poorly but all other companies in the group perform well, the ETF will perform well overall.
Stocks
A stock represents a piece of a company, for example, if a company has issued 10 shares and you own 1 share, you own 10% of the company (of course companies will generally issue way more than 10 shares).
