Real Talk: Is Money Evil?
“Money is the root of all evil”. You probably heard this quote from the Bible before. But what most people fail to realise is that this is only half of the quote. From 1 Timothy 6:10, the full quote is actually: “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” So in fact, the Bible didn’t say that money is evil. It’s the love for money, especially the greed that most people have for it, that is evil. Money itself is not good or evil. We all know that many people would do terrible things to become rich. And that is why most people in the world are afraid that if you love money, you will inevitably turn into one of those immoral, selfish individuals. And some people do in fact become monsters when they lust after money. But once again, having money is not evil. If you do become a rich individual, you have the option to choose how to spend your money. You can always choose to be an individual that is both rich and generous, not foolish and selfish. Money simply gives you a choice. It is simply a tool. Money in the hands of the right individuals can do immeasurable good. Singer and songwriter Dolly Parton has donated millions to advocate for education. JM Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, gifted the rights of this famous work to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1929 and these rights have provided funding for the children’s hospital ever since. But money in the wrong hands can do incredible evil. Money itself is not evil. Nor is the attainment of money. Money is simply a tool that allows dreams to come true.
